23 Dec 2016	Defence to review cases of withheld or refused honours and awards Minister for Defence Personnel Dan Tehan said today Defence would review the applications it had received for historical cases of former Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel who had their honours and awards withheld or refused.  The majority of personnel whose medals were withheld or forfeited served during or shortly after World War II.  Mr Tehan said the Government had accepted the first four of five recommendations from the Defence Honours and Awards Appeals Tribunal report on its Inquiry into the refusal to issue entitlements to, withholding and forfeiture of Defence Honours and Awards.  More.....

21 Dec 2016	Australian Defence Force Members awarded Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation Australian Defence Force members from the Royal Australian Navy Clearance Diving Team Three (CDT3), Royal Australian Navy Helicopter Flight Vietnam (RANHFV), Royal Australian Air Force Transport Flight Vietnam (RTFV)/35 Squadron (SQN) and 9 SQN who served in Vietnam 50 years ago have been recognised with the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation (the Citation).  More.....

20 Dec 2016	Release of Government response to Vietnam Veterans’ Family Study Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan today released the Australian Government’s response to the Vietnam Veterans’ Family Study.  The Vietnam Veterans’ Family Study compared the physical, mental and social wellbeing of two groups of Australian veterans: 10,000 randomly selected Army Vietnam veterans and their families with 10,000 randomly selected Defence personnel who served in the Army during the Vietnam War era but did not deploy to Vietnam and their families.  More.....
19 Dec 2016	Veterans' support services continue over Christmas Veterans can be assured that access to crucial support services will continue to be available throughout the Christmas and New Year period, Secretary of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Simon Lewis said today.  Mr Lewis said that providing continued access to support services was very important during the festive season, especially as many of our veterans find this time of year challenging.  More.....

Our Association donated $900.00. The photo shows the Mcleod-Dryden family at the Shrine of Remembrance, after having presented, a cheque for $2,200.00 to the CEO of the Shrine of Remembrance, Dean Lee in Memory of Fred Mcleod-Dryden. 02 Dec 2016	Supporting veterans and communities The Government will honour veterans in towns and cities around Australia with more than $530,000 in grants to ex-service organisations for community projects.  Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said the latest round of 32 grants under the Veteran and Community Grants program would benefit veterans, their families and communities.  “These grants will fund a diverse range of projects and equipment, including facilities upgrades to improve venue accessibility, computer equipment and social outings,” Mr Tehan said.  More.....
30 Nov 2016	Preliminary results from study into veterans’ suicide The Government today released the most statistically robust data ever compiled into the prevalence of suicide among current and former members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF).  The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) study Estimation of incidence of suicide in ex-serving Australian Defence Force personnel used data from the Defence Department’s Personnel Management Key System, which contains information on all people who serve or have served in the ADF from 1 January 2001, and the National Death Index (NDI).  More.....
25 Nov 2016	Cooperation on veterans’ issues Federal, state and territory governments have agreed to improve coordination on veterans’ issues and work more cooperatively on data improvement.  Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said the first-ever meeting between the relevant Ministers for Veterans’ Affairs from each state and territory had focused on transition, homelessness, incarceration and mental health.  More.....

19 Nov 2016	75th anniversary of the sinking of HMAS Sydney Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said Australia remembered the service and sacrifice of the 645 crew of HMAS Sydney that sunk 75 years ago today.  HMAS Sydney and the German raider Kormoran clashed off the West Australian coast resulting in the loss of more than 720 men, including all crew members aboard Sydney, on 19 November 1941.  More.....

06 Nov 2016	VALE - Vice President and Life Member, Fred McLeod-Dryden It is with great sadness we inform you, of the sudden passing of our esteemed Vice President and Life Member, Fred Mcleod-Dryden aged 67. Fred was the founding Father of the HMAS SYDNEY & VLSVA. and our first President, he has been a member of your Committee without a break since 1987. He served in HMAS SYDNEY Vietnam as an OCO in 1967. Fred worked tirelessly from 1987 until the present, to correct perceived anomalies, suffered by the RAN Vietnam Logistic Service Veterans. After leaving the Navy he had a long career in the Victoria Police. As one person put to me tonight, it will not be the same without the presence, of our gentle giant. Fred will be greatly missed by all. The President and committee on behalf of members extend their sincere condolences to his family. F. 04 Nov 2016	Understanding homelessness in the veteran community The Government will get a better understanding of homelessness in the veteran community through a research project announced today.  Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said the University of New South Wales and the University of Adelaide had been engaged to conduct research into homelessness in the veteran community.  The research will be completed by the end of 2017.  More.....

22 Oct 2016	VALE Life Member Fred House, 20308 It is with great sadnesss that we inform members of the passing of our esteemed Life Member Fred House on 20 October 2016. Fred was one of our 5 remaining HMAS SYDNEY 2 World War II Treasures. Fred was the last man alive from the Commissioning Crew of HMAS SYDNEY 2 on 23rd September, 1935. A brief potted history of his life is as follows: Frederick Henry HOUSE was born at Forth, Tasmania on 12th July, 1917. He joined the RAN for 12 years on 21st August, 1934 at age 17 years and 1 month. Sailed to the United Kingdom on HMAS BRISBANE 1 arriving in Portsmouth on his 18th birthday. Discharged from the Royal Australian Navy on 3rd May, 1940 due to deafness caused by an exploding shell. Visited Gallipoli on its 21st Birthday. The 1st WWII Veteran to join Hobart RSL in 1940 with an Annual Fee of 10/-. Still a very active Member of Glenorchy RSL where he was still representing them in Billiards, Snooker, Indoor Bowls and still winning trophies every year. Only person to have received an RSL 75 year Service Certificate. Still held a drivers licence and drove every day although it wasn't recommended that you drive with him. His car was festooned with Navy and Australian stickers. For his 99th birthday he was shouted a ride in a light plane over his beloved Hobart. A fiercely proud Tasmanian and one of natures true Gentlemen. His home in Glenorchy, Tasmania was a Shrine to the Navy and his former Shipmates that he so passionately loved. Now reunited with his 645 Shipmates who paid the supreme sacrifice on 19th November, 1941. FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEAS. F.H. 04 Oct 2016	Release of the IGADF report into complaints about the conduct of anti-malarial drug trials Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Dan Tehan today announced the release of the report from the independent inquiry into the conduct of anti-malarial drug trials in the ADF.  In September 2015 the Inspector-General Australian Defence Force (IGADF) launched an inquiry into a number of allegations relating to the conduct of anti-malarial drug trials involving ADF personnel in East Timor from 2000 to 2002.  The subsequent report contains 72 findings and three recommendations.  More.....

20 Sep 2016	Increase to veteran pensions Veteran pension payments will increase from today.  Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said pension payments would increase from 20 September 2016 in line with indexation for veterans, their partners, war widows and widowers across Australia.  The pension rates are calculated on a daily basis, so pensioners will see a partial increase on their next payday – 29 September 2016.  The new pension rates will be fully effective from payment date 13 October 2016.  View new annual rates.....

15 Sep 2016	Streamlined processing reduces red tape for veterans Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said the Government had cut red tape which meant veterans’ claims would be processed faster.  The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) has reduced the requirements for liability for five medical conditions, reducing the time taken to process around 600 claims a year.  There are now 13 medical conditions streamlined for acceptance of liability under the Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986 (VEA) or the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004 (MRCA).  More.....

JLN Independent Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie has won historic support in the Senate for a motion (attached 1) to establish an independent inquiry and investigation into the performance of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) – especially in relation to crisis in Australian Veterans’ health and rising suicide rates. 10 Sep 2016	World Suicide Prevention Day Bravery comes in many forms.  There is the bravery of the men and women who serve in our armed forces who knowingly put their own life at risk in defence of our country.  And there is bravery in asking for help and bravery in asking someone you know if they need help, no matter how uncomfortable that conversation.  We all need to be brave and these conversations can be difficult.  Suicide and mental health are issues for everyone in our society, including our veterans.  More.....
07 Sep 2016	Veterans’ grants build community connection Ex-service organisations will share more than $600,000 to enhance the lives of those in the veteran community.  Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said the latest round of 35 grants under the Veteran and Community Grants program would directly benefit veterans and their families.  “These grants will assist members of the veteran community to remain independent, healthy and active as well as helping reduce social isolation, especially for those who live alone,” Mr Tehan said.  More.....
03 Sep 2016	Response to Defence Abuse Response Task Force Final Report The Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin, has thanked the Defence Abuse Response Taskforce for its work after the Taskforce’s final report was released by the Government yesterday.  The final report marks the completion of a significant body of work by Chairman Robert Cornall, AO and members of the Taskforce over more than three years.  “These are difficult matters and I thank the Taskforce for its sensitivity, professionalism and dedication to the complainants,” Air Chief Marshal Binskin said.  More.....

24 Aug 2016	DVA supports vibrant veteran networks The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Dan Tehan, today announced 15 ex-service organisations would share in nearly $140,000 Grants in Aid funding in 2016–17.  “The Grants in Aid program provides administrative support to national ex-service organisations in recognition of the work they do supporting the veteran community,” Mr Tehan said.  More.....
24 Aug 2016	Veterans helping veterans receive $4m boost The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Dan Tehan, today announced more than $4 million in Government funding for essential advice, advocacy and welfare services for veterans, serving members and their families, war widows and widowers.  “The Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) grants program will support 144 ex-service organisations (ESO) across Australia to continue providing help and advice to the veteran community,” Mr Tehan said.  More.....

16 Jul 2016	6RAR and HMAS Sydney On 18 August 1966, the best known battle of the Vietnam War, involving Australian forces, occurred in a rubber plantation north of the abandoned village of Long Tan, four kilometres east of the Australian base at Nui Dat. Troops from D Company, of the Sixth Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), in pursuit of a squad of six to eight of the enemy, came under intense small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire, and were immediately pinned down.  The intensity of this fire decimated the leading platoon, with at least a third of its strength either killed or wounded.  More.....

30 Jun 2016	Statement by the Vice Chief of the Defence Force to survivors of abuse Thank you for the opportunity for me to acknowledge the courage and the strength of the survivors who have come forward and told their stories; not only those who have come forward to this Commission but those who have come forward to the Defence Abuse Response Taskforce and to Defence more generally.  Your stories are changing the ADF and they have strengthened the resolve of the senior leadership of the ADF to stamp out abuse in all its forms and, in particular, child sexual abuse.  People and systems have failed you and they have put others at risk.  That is simply not good enough.  More.....

As such, Defence has decided to publish the full interview recently conducted by the ABC’s 730 with the Surgeon General of the ADF discussing the work done by Defence on this issue and the support that is available to those who are affected. My vision is to set up a live a board the vessel option [full or part time] for ex Navy personnel who would like to go back to their roots and be part of a crew again [without the yes sir, no sir], also, to help bring the Banks back to her former glory and cruise her up and down the East Coast of Australia as a Navy Museum, Naval Cadet Training Vessel and perhaps along the way a venue for other ex military personnel to have functions/events on board. 20 May 2016	Soil testing starts at Albatross and Creswell The Department of Defence has commenced an environmental investigation at HMAS Albatross and nearby HMAS Creswell to evaluate the potential presence of chemicals which were historically used in fire fighting foams.  Defence commenced phasing out this form of foam from 2004 when it became known that PFOS and PFOA were emerging as potential contaminants.  More.....
20 May 2016	75th Anniversary of Commissioning of 'Q' Class Destroyers 2017 marks the 75th anniversary of the commissioning of the eight 'Q' class destroyers.  To honour this occasion, the Ex HMAS Quickmatch Association is having a sunset commemoration and wreath laying ceremony at the NSW Penrith RSL on Thursday March 16th, 2017.  A luncheon is to be held at the RSL the following day, Friday 17th at 1300.
20 May 2016	Australians Reunited – Terendak Repatriation, 2 June 2016 On Thursday, 2 June 2016 Australia will welcome home 33 Australian service personnel and dependents, many of whom were casualties of the Vietnam War, from cemeteries in Malaysia and Singapore.  It will be one of the largest single repatriations of Australian service men and dependents in Australia’s history.  More.....

16 May 2016	Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse Defence acknowledges today’s announcement that the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse will conduct a Defence case study.  The Defence case study will inquire into allegations of child abuse within certain areas of the Australian Defence Force.  This includes allegations of historical abuse of children under the age of 18 and will focus on Navy’s former Junior Recruit Training Establishment at HMAS Leeuwin, the Army Apprentices’ School at Balcombe, and Australian Defence Force Cadet organisations from 2000 to present.  More.....
12 May 2016	Australia commemorates Vietnam War veterans on 50th anniversary of Battle of Long Tan Australia’s Vietnam War veterans will be honoured with a series of commemorative events this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said today.  The Battle of Long Tan took place on 18 August 1966.  It was the most costly single battle fought by Australian soldiers in the Vietnam War, involving 105 Australians and three New Zealanders from D Company 6RAR and more than 2,000 enemy troops.  More.....

08 Apr 2016	Ex-HMA Ships Tobruk and Sydney to be offered as Dive Wrecks Minister for Defence Senator the Hon Marise Payne today announced that the decommissioned vessels, ex-HMA Ships Tobruk and Sydney, will be offered to the States and Territories for the creation of dive wrecks.  After decades of invaluable service in the Royal Australian Navy, Tobruk and Sydney were decommissioned in July 2015 and November 2015 respectively.  More.....

20 Mar 2016	Veteran Pensions Set to Increase Veteran pension payments will increase in March in line with the biannual indexation process.  Pension recipients including veterans, their partners, war widows and widowers across Australia will see the increase from 20 March 2016.  Due to pension rates calculating on a daily basis, the first pension paid after the indexation on payday 31 March 2016 will comprise both the old and new rates.  More.....

This is their March edition principally devoted to the Defence Community and their health care. All veteran family members should be encouraged to discuss the material with their GP so he/she does bother to read it and they are likewise familiar with it too. I co-authored the DVA portion of one article but collectively it brings all defence community related medical information together in the one place; a first in general practice and long overdue. 01 Mar 2016	CN: Royal Australian Navy's 115th Birthday Address at the Navy Memorial, Canberra This morning the Navy’s largest Australian White Ensign is flying from the Flagstaff at Regatta Point because the RAN is celebrating its birthday at sea, in our shore establishments and here in the nation’s capital.  Today is the 115th anniversary of creation of the Navy by the Federal Parliament on 1 March 1901.  The legislation that enabled the Commonwealth Naval Force and the Commonwealth Military Forces, as defined in the constitution, was passed into law just eight weeks after the Federation had been proclaimed on 1 January 1901.  More.....

28 Feb 2016	Statement on Lone Pine Commemorations The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Dan Tehan, has announced that the Department of Veterans’ Affairs will plan a wreath laying ceremony at Lone Pine on the afternoon of the 24 April 2016, and in accordance with arrangements for the centenary of the Battle of Lone Pine last year, on 6 August the Department will hold a Lone Pine commemorative service for those who wish to pay their respects at the time and place the battle began.  More.....
26 Feb 2016	Sydney sailor remembered in AWM service A sailor lost during HMAS Sydney’s battle with a German raider off the coast of Western Australia will be remembered at this afternoon’s Australian War Memorial Last Post Ceremony.  Commander Paul Cottier will lead the reading to remember Able Seaman Martin Curtis James who was among 645 killed in one of Australia’s biggest war mysteries that was solved in 2008.  More.....

23 Feb 2016	Child sexual abuse in the Australian Defence Force Cadets The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse would like anyone who has information regarding child sexual abuse within the Australian Defence Force Cadets to contact the Royal Commission. Royal Commission CEO Philip Reed said the Royal Commission is tasked with investigating how institutions, including government agencies, have responded to allegations and incidents of child sexual abuse. “If you were sexually abused as a member of the Australian Defence Force Cadets when you were a child, the Royal Commission would like to hear from you,” he said. Mr Reed confirmed that the identity of anyone who provides information will be protected and will be kept confidential. At this stage, no public hearing into the Australian Defence Force has been announced. If a hearing is announced at a later date, victims of child sexual abuse will not be compelled to give evidence if they do not wish to. 11 Feb 2016	Phuoc Tuy Province - Vung Tau - Rung Sat Special Zone (article by Dr. John Carroll) The coastal province of Phuoc Tuy was the centre of operations for much of the Australian military effort in Vietnam between the latter half of 1966 and into the first months of 1972.  While the harbour municipality of Vung Tau was the base for First Army Logistical Support Group (1ALSG) from 1965 to 1972, it was also home base to the RAN’s Clearance Diving Team Three (CDT3). No. 9 Squadron and No. 35 Squadron RAAF were also based at Vung Tau airfield.  More.....
11 Feb 2016	HMAS Cerberus Open Day HMAS Cerberus will be holding its biennial Open Day on Sunday 23rd October 2016. The theme for this event is to be ‘Communication and Innovation’ and will incorporate the anniversary of 95 Years of Training.  The Open Day planning has commenced and is hoped to include displays and demonstrations from the Navy, Army and Air Force, as well as emergency services, various civilian groups, local businesses and community organisations.  The event attracts in excess of 20,000 visitors and is widely publicised throughout Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula.  Mark it down on your calendar.
10 Feb 2016	A new plan to attract and retain submariners The Submarine Deliberately Differentiated Package was announced on 29 January, and Assistant Director of Navy Workforce Management (Warfare), Commander Guy Blackburn, said the package was a new approach to delivering Navy’s workforce requirements.  "It addresses the financial considerations as well as the wider professional, career and social issues that submariners indicated are affecting their intention to serve in the submarine capability and wider Navy," he said.  More.....
07 Feb 2016	Melbourne hosts the Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience The Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience travelling exhibition officially opened in Melbourne today. Featuring more than 200 artefacts, usually housed at the Australian War Memorial, Melbourne residents are encouraged to visit this once-in-a-lifetime experience.  The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Centenary of ANZAC, Stuart Robert, said the travelling exhibition has been widely embraced by audiences.  More.....
04 Feb 2016	A short message from our President Dear All Just a short note to inform all members that Laura Benney, one of our younger members, was yesterday, 03 February 2016, presented with a Spirit of ANZAC Centennial award from the State Minister for Veterans Affairs, John Eren. This award enables Laura to tour both Gallipoli and the Western Front, and in her words, ‘put her studies into perspective’. 31 Jan 2016	ADSO Comment On The Proposed Royal Commission Into DVA ADSO is an alliance of some of the most long-standing defence and ex-service organisations in Australia.  Each in their own right has strong ties to both their inservice ADF constituencies and to the veterans with whom they once served and counted as colleagues.  Collectively, they now number over 90,000 members.  Recently a number of member organisations have been approached by the Australian Peacekeeper & Peacemaker Veterans' Association (APPVA) to support a call for a Royal Commission into the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA).  More.....
30 Jan 2016	Article for the AFL Footy Record From Our President John Carroll Members, My eldest daughter, Lynda, has been approached by the editor of the AFL Football Record to write an article which is intended to tie in with the 50th anniversary of Long Tan, combined with recognition of Vietnam Veterans Day. The editor of the Record is seeking a piece that both illustrates and details the ways in which veterans were able to keep supporting their football (VFL/AFL) teams, even while on active service. For example; some may have watched replays, or listened for scores while at sea, others may have listened for scores while out on patrol. Her interest lies in finding a small number of veterans from all services who kept in touch with the game then, and who have since maintained the connection. She would like to undertake short interviews, and, if possible seek relevant photographs as well. This is a firm, partially scheduled article, timetabled to appear in the Football Record around August to coincide with the dates/times mentioned above. 26 Jan 2016	Mr David George Dwyer OAM Our esteemed Secretary was today named in today's Australia Day Honours List.  Dave has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia.  I'm sure you'll all agree it's an award that is well-deserved and maybe even overdue.  Dave has worked tirelessly for many years for our Association.  And let's not forget all the extra work he undertook in 2015 for our 50th anniversary dinner/dance and the ANZAC Naval Commemorative Ball.  Also the time and effort he puts in every year as Parade Marshall for Anzac Day in Melbourne.  A truly worthy recipient of the OAM.  Bravo Zulu David.

It is with great sadness that we inform members of the passing of Bob 'Darkie' Henwood.  Bob's name was listed in our sickbay page from February 2015 with terminal brain cancer.  It seems he put up a great fight and finally succumbed on the 15 December 2015.  Bob placed his own notice in the paper which said: HENWOOD, Robert James (Darkie)17/09/1941 15/12/2015 Dearly loved son of Rex and Edna(both deceased) Loved brother of Norm (deceased) "G'day to all my friends. 19 Jan 2016	Whitsunday memorial for HMAS Sydney officers A memorial has been unveiled in Airlie Beach, Queensland, to honour the sacrifices of a group of Navy officers 50 years ago.  HMAS Cairns provided a Catafalque guard for the opening of a memorial for the five young men who lost their lives during a training exercise in 1963.  The group, from HMAS Sydney, had been navigating a 27 foot whaler boat around Hook Island in the Whitsundays.  The vessel went missing for several days, and was eventually found upturned.  Two bodies were recovered, but three were never found.  More.....
15 Jan 2016	Recent reports on the use of mefloquine in the ADF - On the Record In recent months there have been numerous reports regarding the use of the anti-malarial drug mefloquine in the ADF.  The nature of the reporting will have caused concern for some current and former serving members of the ADF.  Despite comprehensive responses being provided to a number of media outlets over the past months, the Defence position and supporting evidence provided has continued to be used selectively in many of these reports.  More.....

12 Jan 2016	Community Consultation now open for Toowoomba and Wodonga VAN Shopfronts The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) is asking ex-service organisations, DVA service providers and members of the veteran and ex-service communities to have their say about how best to deliver in-person services at Toowoomba in Queensland and Wodonga in Victoria.  The consultation was originally due to conclude on 20 January 2016.  However, because the consultations are being held during a traditional holiday period, DVA has extended the consultation period to 5 February 2016.  More.....

06 Jan 2016	1 January 2016 listing changes for over-the-counter products As part of the 2015-16 Budget savings measures, selected over-the-counter (OTC) medicines have been delisted from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) effective 1 January 2016.  The measure made provision for the impact on veterans and allowed for the proposed delistings to be considered by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ Repatriation Pharmaceutical Reference Committee (RPRC).  The RPRC considered submissions and recommended items for transfer to the Repatriation Schedule of Pharmaceutical Benefits (RSPB) from 1 January 2016.  More.....

Vietnam Veterans'
Commemorative Walk
The Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk in High St., Seymour, commemorates the 60,000+ service personnel and the 11 tracker dogs who served during the 14 years of the Vietnam War. The Walk incorporates a meandering red earth path set in native trees and grasses that resemble rubber trees and rice paddies. These two plants being synonymous to Vietnam. Along the length of the Walk are walls with the names of all the Australian personnel who served in Vietnam. Contemplation areas are incorporated into the Walk as a place for people to sit and reflect on the sacrifices of those that went before us serving our country. Click image to view the video.

Under A Rising Sun

A poem, Under A Rising Sun, written by one of our members, Laura Benney, aged 13, was read by me at the Anzac Day service at the Seaford RSL in 2013. Laura's great great grandfather, paid the ultimate sacrifice when he was killed on the Western Front in 1916. It is in tribute to him that she penned these words.
