![]() High above the City of Geraldton in Western Australia, at the National HMAS Sydney II Memorial, the figure of a woman stands with her gaze fixed patiently on the horizon; she is waiting for her man; grieving for her lost father, husband, brother, son; hoping that her ship will be found. Remarkably, she is eerily prophetic of the search for Sydney because she stared down the exact bearing of the wreck for seven years before its discovery by the Finding Sydney Foundation (FSF) some 200 km to the North West. Regrettably, only hindsight provided this knowledge as serendipity did not play a part in the search for Sydney rather, the discovery was a triumph for commitment, persistence and science by a small group of ordinary Australians employing world leaders in deep water search operations and technology. This article was written by CDRE Bob Trotter OAM RAN (Rtd), Director of the Finding Sydney Foundation, in 2011, for the Naval Officers’ Club Newsletter. Bob thought that members of the HMAS Sydney Association would gain a better insight into the actual background behind the finding of HMAS Sydney II. Members may also note the work that went into convincing certain authorities and Institutions well before David Mearns and Blue Water Recoveries were involved. An eye opener to those who may think that the finding of Sydney II was down to just one person. Continue reading the article..... |

![]() Recognition of the RAN contribution to the Australian involvement in Vietnam between 1965 and 1972 is usually limited to naval gunfire support provided by destroyers with only a passing reference to logistic support by HMAS Sydney. The author served twice in HMAS Sydney: in 1967 and again in 1972. Both editions of this book are based on his doctoral dissertation, and have several aims: to demonstrate the vital importance of the RAN’s logistic contribution to 1 Australian Task Force (1ATF) in Vietnam, to illustrate the risks involved, to note the injustice of not recognizing for many years the service of those who served and also how they were exposed to extreme risk from Agent Orange. ![]() Reviewed by Dr Tim Coyle PhD The war in Vietnam is known as the ‘television war’ as nightly news telecasts carried graphic footage of combat operations by Australian and US troops for years in the 1960s and early 1970s. This exhaustive coverage fed community disquiet leading to mass ‘moratorium’ demonstrations by students and other community members while increasing numbers of Australian troops died in action or were returned wounded to Australia. What was not foreseen at the time of Australian withdrawal from the war in 1971 was the effect of what is now known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder on veterans and the creeping cancers inflicted by Agent Orange defoliant. Out of Sight, Out of Mind is devoted to the RAN ships and their companies engaged in logistic support to the Australian Army Task Forces in Vietnam. Read the full review..... |

Commemorative Walk
The
Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk in High St.,
Seymour, commemorates the
60,000+ service personnel and the 11 tracker dogs who served during the
14 years of the Vietnam War. The Walk incorporates a meandering red
earth path set in native trees and grasses that resemble rubber trees
and rice paddies. These two plants being synonymous to Vietnam. Along
the length of the Walk are walls with the names of all the Australian
personnel who served in Vietnam. Contemplation areas are incorporated
into the Walk as a place for people to sit and reflect on the sacrifices
of those that went before us serving our country. Click image to view

Under A Rising Sun
In
2013, I had the pleasure of reading a poem, "Under A Rising Sun", written by one of our members,
Laura Benney, aged 13, at the Seaford RSL Anzac Day service.
Laura's great great grandfather, paid the ultimate
sacrifice when he was killed on the Western Front in 1916. It is in
tribute to him that she penned these words.
